Arrival in Sarria

We have arrived in Sarria!   The trip was almost smooth - The plan was that twelve of us would travel together from Cleveland through Philadelphia to Madrid; then train to Sarria and find our way to the hotel, where we would meet up with everyone else.   It almost worked.   One person missed the plane - we hope to see her soon.   One other person (me) left his train ticket in Cleveland and had to buy a new one.    And the train from Cleveland was delayed and we had to go VERY QUICKLY through Philadelphia's airport to catch the connecting flight.   Once we got on - it was delayed also!

Observe the sticker under the park's name.  Spain's Mediterranean coast is a potential landing place for refugees from the Middle East and Northern Africa.  I wonder how many people share this sentiment.


The hotel is beautiful and we had a delightful dinner together.  After a very long day of travel (more like a day and a half) with minimal sleep, we are all very tired.   So - this will be a short entry.   Tomorrow we will begin our hike after breakfast.

Day 6 - Arzua to Rua

We left the very nice hotel where we stayed last night after a good breakfast.  Since the hotel was so far out of town, they drove us back to the point where we had been picked up yesterday evening.  The proprietors were a delightful family; although they spoke little English, they were very attentive to our needs. I began the day with a husband and wife from Australia, who have been hiking for many weeks.  John, the husband, has fought shin splints and is largely over them but was feeling a bit under the weather today.   His wife Louise is a sweet woman who told me some stories about people they have encountered since they started.  Since they were going rather slowly, I picked up my pace when we were joined by a man from Japan who started in Leon about a week before we began.  He is my age or older, but liked walking very fast (but not so fast that I couldn't keep up).   His English was only slightly better than my Spanish, so our communi...

Day 5 - Melide to Arzua

First, a picture taken last night of the whole group.   Unfortunately, the people in the back are hard to make out - but you can see that we are all having fun! The path today was very different than it has been the past few days.   While on the other days it was like being part of a walk-a-thon - almost like a big party - today people were few and far between.   I began the day walking with a husband and wife from Perth, Australia.  After only a kilometer or two, they stopped to discuss which way to go when there were two routes to choose from; I chose the route to the right and kept going.   I then walked a very long way without a companion.   The scenery was beautiful, and plenty of cows mooed at me to keep me company. Day 4 - Palas de Rei to Melide

The last posting indicated that the hotel was owned by a small nearby restaurant.   This morning, we ate breakfast at that restaurant.   The menu:   croissants, toast, coffee, and orange juice.   That's it!  We weren't sorry to say goodbye to that establishment!   The people seemed nice - but we've paid for better accommodations than that!   They may be hearing from us - and also the travel agent. The walk today was much shorter, only about nine miles (the first two days were about 14 miles).  Early on, I encountered the following graffiti on one of the signposts: The text reads "Don't count KM, KCal, or steps, but Experiences".   This proved to be a good prophesy for the day.
